Paris
Paris is an elegant two-player strategy game designed by José Antonio Abascal and beautifully illustrated by Oriol Hernández, capturing the charm and atmosphere of the French capital at the end of the 19th century.
The game is set during the 1889 Exposition Universelle, a time when public electricity was transforming Paris. As electric streetlights spread through the city, Paris earned its famous nickname: “La Cité de la Lumière” — The City of Light. The brighter a building, the more admiration it receives from passers-by.
Gameplay Overview
The game unfolds over two distinct phases:
Phase 1 – Planning the City
Players take turns either placing cobblestone tiles or expanding their personal reserve of buildings. Each tile is divided into four spaces, randomly featuring:-
Your color
-
Your opponent’s color
-
A streetlight
-
A mixed-color space where either player may build
Phase 2 – Building for Glory
Players construct buildings on spaces of their color or mixed spaces, carefully positioning them to be as close as possible to streetlights. The more streetlights illuminating a building, the more admiration—and points—it earns. When construction ends, the player whose buildings are best lit captures the hearts of Parisian pedestrians and wins the game.
